10.10.13 - Working from home.

I've taken the conscious decision to work from home today.
Its the first week, i know everyone is going to be in the studio, catching up, talking with old friends and its just not going to be an atmosphere where i will be able to get work done.
In my first two years of university, i was one of a small group who made the decision to work in the studio every day, on a 9 - 5 routine, its what made the hours of the day work best for me was keeping a schedule, so next week i'll be going straight back to that, but i've made the choice to skip out the first week, let people find their spots and slide back in.
Since i'm working from home for the day, i'll keep a regular update on the blog today, not just a roundup at the end.
Todays to do list reads as such:
- Type up project summary of collab project
- Fill out "what inspires me sheet"
- Update blog on backlog of artist research
- Work from man-ray photographs
- Write out questions for tutorial on Monday.
- Print out timetable
(Rock n' roll day huh?!)
Update Soon.

09.10.13 - Half Day Limbo

Hello again. Today as titled was a bit of a half day limbo
We were in nice and early in the morning for a lecture going through the intricate details of our learning outcomes and how we will be assessed and all those scary things.
I made my notes in paper but the main points i had down to consider were actually to do with this blog and will it hold me back in any way.
I bluddy hope not cause its the most productive way for me to get down all my thoughts up in my brain box actually making sense with words and pictures and things. (plus amen auto correct)
I think im going to keep the tabs the same way i did last year but make them a lot of specific so one post might have a lot of tabs because it overlaps onto different parts of the learning outcomes. I have a slight suspicion it might get a little complicated but its always a thing that can be edited constantly so we'll work with as it goes along.
In the meeting we also spoke about portfolios and all that jazz, i did get a lovely thought pop into my head when we were speaking about archive boxes. If i wanted to maybe continue looking into memories and how they get made into myths/stories personal dealings,it might be nice to have some sort of collection of images almost like a memory box, like a little momentum, its a very early idea, but i wanted to get it written down before i forgot.
Then, as half day limbos go, work didnt get started again till after a long lunch.
I wanted to get a bit of a start on the drawings that me and Annabel are going to discuss in our recorded conversation. I decided to start with black watercolour, its something i'm familiar with and gives a good impression of what im trying to get across easily. I worked with the photographs Annabel had given me and started with just interpreting them into paint. Tomorrow i hope to develop some of them further, might need a brain storm tomorrow morning so stay tuned.
Update Soon.

08.10.13 - Ice Age Nudes

After the notes left on our project while in the class, we were given the advise to look into ice age art and that it was the first female representation of nudes.
And i'm very glad i did, how lovely are these!
Im blown away with how modern these look, its incredible, its almost like we as humans have come so far that we've looped back on ourselves by trying to be minimal and didn't even realised that we'd already done it.
These sculptures made of out animal bone and horn and stone.
They depict pregnant females and were thought to be made for religious art.
From the research i've done briefly it seems theres a bit of discussion about why they were originally made and it was assumed that they were made by women, for women because of the lack of erotic nature or sexual undertones in the figures. On the other hand its been said it could've been made by men, but of a female who was of higher authority or of an older age therefore not seen as a mate.
I personally think they look beautiful and find it amazing the proportions of the women are put together.
It almost feels like it all the genetics of one family who were all blessed with big breasts and a pair of hips to match.
I also couldn't find out any information about why there heads were facing down , looking onto their bodies but if it only used for the aesthetic appeal, its so beautiful and humbling, it makes them seem modest in my eyes, i'm not to sure why it gives me that feeling, maybe its almost as if they've bowing their heads being shy.

They definitely are the first signs of fertility and beauty seen in the female figure as a representation to show this.
Also with these pieces being sculptures, they have a smallness about them which makes me wants to hold them, like dolls, i'm not sure if this was the intention, but they definitely feel soft enough to touch.
Update soon.

08.10.13 - Exchanging Research Ideas (Collaboration Project)

17:48 - I am exhausted! I write this, a day into our first new project, a collaboration task!
I should of really done a roundup of our first day yesterday so apologies for not being on the ball but i was very bluddy tired when i got in and really just wanted to eat some mash and watch the one show. Like anyone else would.
But basically yesterday was an intense day of listening to A LOT of information about the next couple of weeks and how its going to go, and some important information on the research report and how to think about our work and plan for time
I'll be honest, it was an amazing amount to take in on the first day back, i was just overwhelmed with how much we were told to get ready for this year. Its almost sometimes feels like someone is shouting "DON'T PANIC! ALL WILL BE FINE" and you just sit there, not blinking and nodding
BUT thats completely different subject.

So yes, today. As a round-up to the end of the day yesterday we were put with our partner and went through our different projects
My partner is a student named Annabel Osborn, and her project at the moment is a working progress but has a clear idea of wanting to look into new and digital media and how it has made an impact on illustration and society as a whole!
And as you can see extremely different to my own project of looking, at the moment at 15th and 16th century renaissance paintings...
SO, i'll be honest we were a bit unsure of how to tackle it from the get go. We discussed about how we like to work and what we had done in past projects. I spoke about the jist of my work, explaining how i like storytelling and allegorical art and everything being broken down and explained, and Annabel spoke about how she has taken her work to a more academic side focusing on more of her research project as she has grown out of wanting to draw.
This led quite well onto the fact that im quite different in that i do still love to draw but also am now really getting into looking and the history and background of a piece and we spoke about how annabel had once taken a class in "Theory of Knowledge" and had looked into how women have portrayed.
This then led onto us discussing how in the classical paintings i had been researching into with the use of the female figure, in particular the nudes.
We discussed about artist that we both know looked at nudes and artists we had dealt with previously so know a fair bit about. I spoke about Klimt and Schiele and showed how they used a more angular structure with womens figures and compared with the curvier women shown in the classical paintings such as titian. Annabel also spoke about Tom Wesselmann and his use of block colour to show erotic undertones in the swinging 60's.
After this use of discussion, we spoke about how our work could be collaborated on using these themes we had chosen to go down. With Annabel wishing to continue her work without drawing or painting i suggested it might be interesting to work with collage and see how that could be tackled with this subject matter. Annabel seemed also want to continue down this route so we spoke about how our work could correlate with each other.
In the end, we have decided to work on joint pieces. I will find a classical paintings for Annabel to use as inspiration for making a collage and then Annabel will find photographs for me to use an inspiration for drawings. We will then meet up on Friday to have our "Recorded Dialogue" bringing in those first ideas that we have made and then throughout our discussion advised and critically review each others pieces, then after the discussion go away and produce another piece on the advice that was given in the recorded dialogue.
We then after a lunch break were asked to put all of our findings together and let the class then walk around and see each others work.
While this happened we had been left a post-it note which i think was from the lecturers reading: "ice age art was the first representation of the female nude. Henry moore and picasso were hugely influenced by these primitive sculptures. Could be interesting to explore"

WOW loads of writing. Sorry, but there was a lot i needed to get down so i didnt forget.

So yes, after a rocky start we've actually come out with what i think will be a really interesting little project.
So as you can see i have a lot to be getting on with and with it still being the first week theres a lot of starting up lectures going on so it actually leaves me with wednesday afternoon and thursday to be the only time i can get my first sketches down to have for the recorded dialogue on friday.
I've included some of the notes myself and Annabel made of our discussions.
Update Soon!

5.10.13 - Ovids Metamorphoses - BBC Radio 4 Discussion Notes

"Melvyn Bragg explores the enduring appeal of the Roman poet Ovid's work Metamorphoses. With A.S. Byatt and A. Catherine Bates."This was a helpful little nugget i found along my paths of trawling through hours of terrible people spouting their views about the book
In this half an hour long discussion, Melvyn Bragg and his guests speak about the book and its appeal and significant myths and passages that are included in the book.

At the time i was listening i was writing in my little note book all the notes, so im just going to retype them out here with a little bit more sense.

  • Shakesperes favourite poet was Ovid
  • What is Ovid doing? He is describing the world and how it is totally in flux all the time
  • Ovid was interested in everything changing the contact changes that are going on around us.
  • Ovid has no straight moral line when it comes to the stories told, The gods are constantly badly behaved and treated humans very poorly
  • The Ovid gods are very human like and are constantly seized by passion
  • There are overlaying themes running throughout of punishment and release of that punishment. Whenever there is human achievement or failing its turned into an animal or object and then its a way of the audience remembering the stories
  • Themes of ecology and green peace
  • He puts chaos into order and form
  • In Ovids writing he makes sense of place in a very visual way.

There were more notes about specific passage in the book but i think iw ill include them in specific analysis that i plan to do on the stories i'm thinking of going into more depth with.

5.10.13 - New In: Ovid - Metamorphoses & Ted Hughes - Tales from Ovid

"The Metamorphoses consists
of fifteen books. They can be divided into six sections. First, the narrator prays to the gods for inspiration, lays out his theme (metamorphosis), and states his intention to write a single continuous poem that stretches from the origins of the world to his own day.
Second, the narrator describes the creation of the world. Primordial chaos is transformed into an orderly creation, and human life is formed. Almost immediately, humans start behaving badly. In response to the general immorality, Jupiter and his brother, Neptune, drown humanity. The only survivors are Deucalion and Pyrrha, pious people. Eventually, a new breed of humanity emerges.
The third section spans five books. In this section, Ovid focuses on the gods and their interactions with mortals. He begins with the theme of divine rape. In Book I, Apollo attempts to rape the nymph Daphne, who escapes at the last moment when her father transforms her into a laurel tree. Jupiter rapes Io, Callisto, and Europa. In Book II, the narrator recounts the story of Phaethon’s fatal chariot ride, which nearly destroys the world. In Book III, the narrator tells several stories connected to Cadmus’s founding of Thebes. He writes about the death of Actaeon and Semele, the birth of Bacchus, and Pentheus’s refusal to worship Bacchus. In Books IV and V, Ovid tells of Perseus’s victory over Atlas, his rescue of and marriage to Andromeda, and his battle with Phineus. This section ends with a song contest between the Muses and Pierides and a weaving contest between Minerva and Arachne. The Muses turn Pierides into magpies, and Minerva turns Arachne into a spider.
In the fourth section, Ovid moves into the realm of heroes and heroines. The narrator recounts the exploits of Jason, who stole the fleece from the serpent, and tells several stories about the power and magic of Medea. He explains Minos’s preparations to attack Athens, and his siege of the city of Alcathous, where Scylla falls in love with him. The narrator also tells the story of the Myrmidons’ miraculous appearance, and the sad tale of Cephalus and Procris. He describes the Calydonian boar hunt, and the sad death of Meleager at his mother’s hand. The section concludes with an extended account of Orpheus’s life and tragic death. Orpheus sings in Books X and XI about the tales of Pygmalion, Myrrha, Hippomenes, and Atalanta.
The fifth section moves us closer to the Trojan War. In Book XII, the narrator recounts Achilles’ battle with Cycnus, whom he chokes to death. Nestor tells of the battle between Caeneus and numerous centaurs. We also hear of Ceyx’s and Alcyone’s love, and Ajax’s verbal contest with Ulysses over the armor of Achilles. Ulysses defeats Ajax. Ajax commits suicide, and his blood produces a hyacinth flower. Aeneas seeks to establish his own land and defeats Turnus in battle. Ovid brings Roman history up through the successive kings of Alba and the preaching of Pythagoras, who speaks against consuming flesh and forecasts the rise of Rome. The narrator mentions Caesar and the rise of Augustus. In the sixth section, which comprises the epilogue, Ovid prophesies a glorious Roman future and the immortality of his work." - Taken from: http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/metamorphoses/summary.html (i really couldnt beat explainging the book any better then that so i dont feel like doing it)
This, ive decided is going to be my main source of research from the beginningThis is where i'll come for the myths and the stories to elaborate on and take resouces from and develop into....something.
Now i am doing a little fibb, no, i have not read all 15 books, sorry but i did have a full time job over summer.
But i have found something that will help me out and is helping me understand better than the literal translation from latin that is completely indigestible.

These are my aquired best friends. These two books im hoping will stuff at least an a-levels amount of knowledge about classics into my brain to start this project off with.

Ted Hughes  "Tales of Ovid" i heard about when i stumbled upon an old recording of a Radio 4 discussion (which i will do a post on) and they spoke about how this was a great modern translation of the book.

This seemed perfect for me, so i snapped it up and was here by next day delivery.
Im currently reading through the book and when my 5 days of paid internet are up will of probably finished this.

Its a very strange read from what i've started, i'm only two tales in (the book holds 24 passages) and is impossible to read in your head, makes no sense whatsoever to me, but when i mumble i outloud to myself, makes perfect sense, i guess this is the difference with poetry, not being the biggest poetry fan, i was just clueless for the first 10 minutes of reading this and was starting to get worried it was all above my head but we seem to be fine now and i'm really enjoying the book.
I keep reading certain lines and wanting to look into them more, which i think is such a good sign from the early onset that things are popping into my head already.

The other book i picked up in my trip to The National Gallery (blog post coming soon going into depth what i saw at the gallery). I had seen online that the recurring images i was looking up were housed in the National Gallery, and i live in Peterborough when not at uni in Norwich, so that made me an hours train away from london so with my leftover work money decided to go up to London for the day to visit the national gallery and then pop over to the portrait gallery
The book is amazing, its a clear defined reference book showing all the gods, and the myths that go along with them and then the classical paintings that have depicted them.
So yes, expect to see the myths and my thoughts of the book on the way!

5.10.13 - Mythology - Stories - Update

Errrmm hello again
Yes, that was supposed to be triumphant comeback in that last post, but that was errmm, quite a bit back, though! i do have an explanation, i do have a pretty big backlog of posts to put up letting you guys know whats going on, but it was just a bit over whelming knowing what order to put them in.
I kind of started this project in my head while i was day dreaming at work, so when i finished it was just a rush of things i needed to put in some sort of linear order but its just to hard to keep up with myself in that way so just roll with me.

Im currently sitting at my desk in my new flat, a day away from starting lectures on monday, and now that ive written out my project proposal, i can finally (kinda) explain what this whole project is about.

So, heres the boring bit, the project proposal.

1. Project Proposal Title:
Modern Mythology and Memories/ Modern Memories/ Retrospective into..[blank]

2. Project Proposal Content:
I intend to look into the myths, how they are explained through art and how this intepretation of tales/fables and poems can be put into my own practice and developed to tell narratives of my own in a modern illustrative approach. I will first research into artist and writers who have studied the subject and then through that, take on looking into my own intepretations of the myths and then developing them into my own versions of modern myths. I would like to also investigate people and memories and look into narrative illustration, and take the same approach that was taken into depeicting the myths.
I find the method of telling the viewer a story through allegorical means the most entertaining and fufilling way to approach my own work.

3. Context and audience:
My primary purpose is quite a selfish one in that I've been wanting to learn more about classics and greek/roman mythology for a long time and i thought that this was such a broad and interesting subject topic that the best way to spend my last year at university would be to explore something that genuinely intrigues me and something that i think will pair well creatively with my style of art. Though saying that in this project i want to explore more of my approach to my work that i picked up on my last project in that i wont have a specific things and object or people that i go into the start of the project wanting to draw, but first do more ground work and research and then when something creative hits, then go into drawing development.
At this moment, i cant see any specific audience for the project, i think that it will be for a more mature mind set in that it will take some basic knowledge of greek and roman mythology and the understanding to analyse a painting in the same way you would analyse a piece of text. So in that sense maybe a audience who have some understanding of the art world and enjoy picking apart a piece or painting.

4. Research Sources:
With my subject topic being widely painted and spoken about i have a lot of different ways i can research:
At the Tate Britain there is range of classical paintings that i have visited and ill discuss later as it comes further into my project.
There is also a lot of text that has been written about the subjects and also classic’s lectures which will discuss the background beginnings of my research and help me understand the basic level of classical mythology
There is also a wide range of painters who have already worked around Ovid’s Metamorphoses that i can look in depth to.
I will visit my universities library for a large range of art books on artists to help explore past work.
Also explore into artist who have had morals and stories to tell through their work such as Grayson Perry

5. Learning Methodology:
I plan to generate my visual ideas from absorbing the most i can from the texts i read and the things i learn throughout the first part of my research. This is a new method for me as i have explained previously in that i usually have starting off points in which i want to draw straight away but i find my most exciting work comes from taking this new method of letting the research decide what comes out visually. But as for starting off, and getting things rolling, i will be mostly focusing on Ovid’s Metamorphoses and using Ted Hughes “Tales from Ovid” as the best way to get an understanding of the text in a short amount of time.
This whole process will be a way for me to acquire new knowledge and is the basis of my reasoning for the project in that i want to learn these things and develop my work around this new found knowledge.
My main weakness that i’ve been identifying is that i have no clear path at this time to go down, this is finding to be also difficult in explaining how i will go about my work as i’m just really unsure of where it will take me from these early stages. All i know from a visual side is that i have always favoured working with paints and drawing so i know that i want to continue with hand drawn images and paintings and i personally think this works best for me.

6. Work for Assessment:I hope to develop what i found from the last project of the second year and that my approach i was taking all throughout the first year and majority of the second didn't help me come up with interesting findings. My new approach of a blank book from the start will hopefully give me, (as this project is for myself) a more insightful and fulfilling response to what i learn. I wish to keep adapting on ideas and beliefs that surround me and work what i find into my visual drawings and art i produce. Its very hard to define what i will learn from this project as the whole project is about tackling things i don't already know and want to learn.
At the end of the project i wish to submit a form of work that shows the knowledge that I've learnt throughout the process and have elements of a narrative/allegorical story.

And then i gave up on 7&8 cause how the bluddy hell am i supposed to plan out a project that i have no clue where is going?! So as soon as i get a chance to talk to someone smarter then me i'll work that one out.

So yes, basically, if you read between the lines, i haven't got a clue what im doing, im just letting myself enjoy learning about all these cool new (well not new, actually really really old) things and then letting my pen do the deciding later on.
For one of the first times in my life, i have absolutely no clue what i will be drawing or what it will look like, and i love it
I want to enjoy my final year of university, and this is the way im finding the most enjoyable so let me get on with it rather then explain it jeeeez!

New project, new obligatory photo of where i will be writing all these god awful blog posts. (SO bare but the pinboard will be up once i find a way to put it up.... hmmm)
